[0:58] Has been doing that the last weeks. And... So as we look here in 1 Samuel...
[1:09] You know, the book of Samuel starts in... With the parents of Samuel and how he came...
[1:26] Was born as an answer to prayer. How his mother dedicated him to the service of the Lord. And it talks about the condition of the nation of Israel.
[1:42] And of Eli and his sons who were priests. And then in chapter 3 we have...
[2:00] How the Lord spoke to Samuel. And then he gave that word of prophecy...
[2:11] Concerning Eli and his sons. And before that in chapter 2 we have... A man of God that came and prophesied against...
[2:22] And prophesied some of the same things. But now... Probably about... According to my Bible...
[2:33] The side column would be about 24 years later... After this word had come through Samuel... We have chapter 4.
[2:47] Now in a read... We will not read the whole chapter... But we will... We will take some verses out here... And as we go through this account...
[3:02] 1 Samuel 4... We'll start in verse 1... And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle...
[3:14] And pitched beside Ebenezer... And the Philistines pitched in Aphek. And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel.
[3:24] And when they joined battle... Israel was smitten before the Philistines. And they slew the army in the field... About 4,000 men. And when the people were come into the camp...
[3:36] The elders of Israel said... Wherefore hath the Lord smitten us today... Before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the Lord...
[3:49] Out of Shiloh unto us... That when it cometh among us... It may save us out of the hand of the enemy. So the people sent to Shiloh...
[4:01] That they might bring from thence... The ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts... Which dwelleth between the Jerobims... And the two sons of Eli... Hophni and Phinehas...
[4:11] Were there with the ark of the covenant. And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord... Came into the camp... All Israel shouted with a great shout... So that the earth rang again.
[4:25] And of course the Philistines wondered... What's going on that these... This army that we defeated... And they ran away from us... They are so happy now...
[4:35] And they're shouting... And they understood that the ark of the Lord... Had come into the camp. Now in a look here... Let's go back to verse 3...
[4:46] It says here... They asked the question... Why has the Lord smitten us today... Before the Philistines? You know they knew the history of Israel...
[4:59] And they knew that... If God is with them... Then they can overcome the enemy. And so they knew...
[5:09] When they were smitten before the enemy... They knew that it was the Lord... Allowing it to happen. And so... We don't know if they...
[5:21] Acknowledged it or not... But it seems like they acknowledged... That the Lord was not with them. The Lord was not with them.
[5:31] And so... They devised a way... That they thought they could have the Lord... Be with them in the next battle. And that was to go and to get the ark...
[5:44] The ark of the covenant... And to bring it into their midst... And surely... You know God dwells in the ark... And if we have the ark here... You know...
[5:58] Yes God dwells... What was it? He dwelt there... The ark was between the seraphims... It says here... And the cherubims... And so...
[6:09] The dwelling of God was at that place... And so they brought the ark of the covenant... God had made this covenant with Israel... And so...
[6:20] It seems to me that they... They thought if they would remind God... Of this covenant... And they would bring the ark into their midst... Then God would be there...
[6:31] And God would be obligated... To save them from their enemies... Did it work?
[6:42] Well no it did not work... They went out... To the battle... And Israel fled... And they were smitten before the Philistines...
[6:54] And there fell of Israel 30,000 footmen... And the ark of God was taken... And the two sons of Eli... Hophni and Phinehas were slain... You know...
[7:05] I believe that we see this much in our day... Is that... People try to devise a way...
[7:16] That God will be with them... You know... Jesus talked about people... Trying to enter in some other way... And it will never work...
[7:27] It will not work to enter in... Some other way... You know... Here in this... In this case... You know... We go on...
[7:38] And in chapter 7... Which was some years later... Samuel spake... To all the house of Israel... In chapter 7...
[7:48] In verse 3... If ye do return unto the Lord... With all your hearts... Then put away the strange gods... And Ashtaroth from among you...
[8:00] And prepare your hearts unto the Lord... And serve Him only... And He will deliver you... Out of the hand of the Philistines...
[8:11] Then the children of Israel... Did put away Balaam and Ashtaroth... And serve the Lord only... You know... Wasn't this what God wanted the first time...
[8:24] You know... When they were smitten... Before the Philistines... And 3,000 men were slain... If they would have put away their idols... They would have put away their false gods...
[8:36] And they would have repented... And given their heart and life to God... I believe He would have saved them... In that next battle... But they tried to devise another way...
[8:49] Another way that would have God in their midst... But they did not want to part with their idols... Today... We don't have...
[9:01] We don't have images... That we bow down to... But how many of us... Have things in our heart... That we're not willing to part with...
[9:13] How many of us... Are still allowing self... To have some say in our life... How many of us... Are still hanging on to things...
[9:24] Are still hanging on to things... That we're not willing... To lay down for the sake of Christ... They realized that day... That the Lord was not with them...
[9:36] You know... We found a quote... I want to read it... To us here today... Life's greatest tragedy... Is to lose the sense of God's presence...
[9:50] And not miss it... To lose the sense of God's presence... In other words... Somehow...
[10:02] We have... We have grieved the spirit of God... We've quenched him... And he has withdrawn... And we don't even miss it... We don't even realize it...
[10:13] Life's greatest tragedy... Is to lose the sense of God's presence... And not miss it... You know... If we miss it... If we know...
[10:24] What has happened... If we know we're in trouble... Then we can repent... But if we don't even... Miss it... If we're so hardened... That we don't even notice... If we're so used to...
[10:36] Living our life on our own... In our own strength... I believe many times... We take for granted... That the Lord is with us... Israel did that...
[10:48] They took for granted... That the Lord was with them... And he was not... And they were defeated... They did not repent that day...
[11:02] But they... Instead tried to devise a way... To force God to go with them... To the battle... But you know... When they repented...
[11:14] When they repented... And they... It says... Samuel admonished them... He said... Prepare your hearts unto the Lord...
[11:25] And serve him only... And so they put away... The false gods... And the... The children of Israel... They were gathered together... To Mizpah...
[11:37] And... And they repented there... Before the Lord... And when the Philistines heard... That Israel was gathered together... They decided to come... And to attack...
[11:48] But this time... The Lord was with Israel... And they were defeated that day... Reminded of Galatians 6...

[13:56] But whoever... Professes to serve God... But has drifted away... If we will... There's only one way... And that is to return to the Lord...
